What do the green lights on the back of Black Diamond mean?
All is well! The Left LED, above the USB connector, indicates that you have made a connection with your computer. The center LED means Black Diamond is receiving power from the external power brick. The right LED means that you've successfully connected your Black Diamond to a computer.
What if the left LED (USB) doesn't light up?
This indicates Black Diamond is not attached to your computer, or that your computer is not turned on. First verify Black Diamond is receiving power (middle LED is illuminated) and the computer is on. Next, verify the USB cable from the computer to Black Diamond is firmly connected. If necessary, unplug each end of the cable one at a time, and plug back in, making sure it seats firmly in the receptacle. If the LED is still not illuminated, contact customer service.
What if the right LED (FireWire) doesn't light up?
If you connect Black Diamond to your computer using a four pin connection at your computer (such as is common on many laptop computers), Black Diamond LED circuit will not detect your computer, but Black Diamond FireWire hub will operate just fine.
Why is the right LED lit up when there's no computer attached?
This light indicates power present on the FireWire bus. Attaching a powered, external hard drive will trick Black Diamond into thinking a computer is attached, and the light will illuminate.
If the center LED (power) doesn't light up
This means the Black Diamond is not receiving power from its power supply. To isolate the problem first check the connection between the power supply and the wall. The power supply has a small green indicator light on it that should illuminate when it has power. If it is out try plugging the power supply into a different wall outlet you know works. If you can not get the power supply LED to illuminate, contact customer support.
A USB port on my Black Diamond has quit working.
This will happen if that peripheral has attempted to draw more than 500ma of power. Black Diamond will deactivate that port as a safety precaution. Users of some operating systems (such as Windows XP) will be offered the chance to reset the port from their computer. Other operating systems may not give the user the chance to do so. In these cases, you can reset the USB side of Black Diamond by unplugging the upstream cable and plugging it back in. Check your user manual for more information and an illustration.
A FireWire port on my Black Diamond has quit working.
This will happen if that peripheral has attempted to draw more than 300ma of power, sometimes as a result of a short circuit in the device. Black Diamond will deactivate that port as a safety precaution. To reset the port, disconnect the peripheral and wait 5 seconds- the port is now reset.
My computer says I've plugged a high speed device into a low speed port. I thought Black Diamond was a high speed hub?
Most likely, your computer does not support high speed USB (USB 2.0). To test this, unplug your Black Diamond from the computer, and plug the peripheral directly in to your computer to see if you get the same error message.
How do I reset Black Diamond?
Unplug the power and plug it back in.
My computer doesn't recognize a peripheral I have plugged into Black Diamond
Try plugging your peripheral directly into your computer to see whether the fault lies with Black Diamond or the computer.
The cables aren't long enough to reach my computer.
Using cables longer than supplied with your Black Diamond may affect performance. Extension cables are available through third party retailers.
I've plugged the cables in but they're still sticking out quite a bit. Is this okay?
Don't worry, this is normal. The Black Diamond was designed to accommodate a wide variety of manufacturer's cables and as a result some cables will 'stick out' further than others, even though they are fully functional.
My cat likes to sleep on Black Diamond- how do I get him off?.
This is a common problem that arose early in our testing. We found that the cats in our focus group preferred sleeping on raised surfaces; as long as Black Diamond is the highest point around, it will attract felines like an open can of tuna.
Will Black Diamond work when set on its side?
While the electronics will work just fine, Black Diamond's ability to retain paper will be greatly reduced by anything other than a horizontal and upright orientation.
I spilled coffee on my Black Diamond, what should I do?
Was it good coffee? If so, soak it up with a paper towel, wringing it out into your cup to drink. Otherwise, disconnect the power and all cables, and clean up your mess. The hub is fairly well protected, but if liquids spill onto the cables where they enter the hub, it is possible for damage to occur unless Black Diamond is powered off and disconnected from all peripherals (all the green lights should be off) until it is dry.
My coworker keeps eyeing my Black Diamond, and I worry it may 'disappear'. Can I lock it to my desk?
Sorry, Black Diamond does not support security locks at this time. We suggest you buy your coworker his or her own Black Diamond.
