- I've heard the new iMac G5 and Power Mac G5's do not work with many FireWire hubs because of some sort of voltage problem- Is PaperHub compatible?
Absolutely! PaperHub has been tested with three different iMac G5 computers and five different G5 towers. In all tests, PaperHub performed flawlessly. The Apple ADC Compatibility Labs in Cupertino were used for these tests; Pressure Drop will continue to utilize those labs to test our products with the latest and greatest Apple hardware as it is released.
- How many devices may be connected?
- Up to four USB peripherals and up to four FireWire peripherals may be directly connected to PaperHub. In addition, each protocol has its own uplink port, and the middle port you see is the power port.
- Why no FireWire 800 (aka 1394b)?
- We carefully considered building our hub around FireWire 800 but after speaking with people who owned FW800 devices, we realized that they typically only had one (which made a hub seem sort of silly) and if they did have two, they were simply daisy chaining them together, so again didn't really need a hub. Add to that all the iPods, iSights, mp3 players, camcorders, and media card readers that would then need to convert from FW400 to the FW800 plugs, and we concluded that we'd serve the greater good by sticking to what people used the most- FireWire 400.
- What size (legal, A4, file folders, etc) and amount will it hold?
- We designed PaperHub to serve a variety of functions, and this question brings up one of its more intangible features: PaperHub looks so good you're going to hate having it buried under paperwork, so you'll clean your inbox out more often, your level of stress will decline (because we all stress when looking at a full inbox, knowing there is stuff in there we need to get to but don't), you will then become happier, more attractive, and achieve a perfect state of zen.* If you insist on creating a Tower of Babel on it then its aluminum frame will take just about anything you can keep in a vertical orientation, but anything over 1" deep on top could overflow or 2.7" in the bottom could get stuck. Top tray will take A4 or US letter, bottom tray is sized for US letter only, and legal is papera non grata. File folders may not fit without some bending of the tab- depends on the file folder. If there is sufficient demand, a larger PaperHub may be built.
- The PaperHub is great, but I have too many peripherals and need more ports, what can I do?
- It's easy to connect multiple hubs such as PaperHub (hint hint wink wink) together, this is known as 'daisy chaining' them. Connect one hub to the other, and so on, until you have enough empty ports for all your peripherals. See the Features section to your left for more information.
- What are the system requirements?
- Please see the requirements section listed to the right.
- How do I know if my computer supports USB?
- Refer to the documentation that came with your computer. If your computer was made during or after 1998, it almost certainly supports USB.
- How do I know if my computer supports FireWire?
- Refer to the documentation that came with your computer. You'll also see this referred to as IEEE1394 or iLink (Sony).
- My computer doesn't have FireWire or USB 2.0. Can I add either?
- Yes. If you have a laptop with an empty PCMCIA slot, you can buy a card that provides either USB 2.0 or FireWire, or one that provides both. Most desktop PCs can be upgraded with inexpensive PCI cards.
- Do I need to connect both the USB and FireWire side to my computer?
- No, but functionality will be limited if both connections are not made (see below).
- If I don't have FireWire on my computer, what functionality will be provided if I only connect to my computer via USB?
- You may connect up to four USB peripherals to your PaperHub. Any FireWire peripherals that you connect will not be able to communicate with your computer. However, power will still be provided to each FireWire port (this can be useful for charging some battery-powered FireWire peripherals).
- If I don't have USB on my computer, what functionality will be provided if I only connect to my computer via FireWire?
- You may connect up to four FireWire peripherals to your PaperHub. Any USB peripherals you connect will not be able to communicate with your computer and will not receive any power.
- How much power is provided to peripherals at each port?
- Each USB port is provided with up to 500mA @ 5V, and each FireWire port receives up to 300mA @ 12V.
- What is the difference between USB and FireWire? Why do I need both?
- While there are electrical differences between the two, what really matters is that a device designed for connection via USB cannot be connected via FireWire, and vice-versa. Hence PaperHub supports both standards to provide the utmost flexibility and performance.
- What data speeds are supported by the USB side of the hub?
- The USB hub supports low, full, and high speed data transfer (480 megabits per second). Since each USB port has its own transaction translator, each of your peripherals will operate at the fastest speed it's capable of (assuming you've connected your PaperHub to a high speed, USB 2.0 port on your computer). If your computer does not support USB 2.0, neither will PaperHub - your peripherals will operate at a slower speed as a result, and your computer will (depending on your operating system) notify you of this fact.
- What data speeds are supported by the FireWire side of the hub?
- PaperHub supports data transmission rates of 100, 200, or 400 megabits per second on the FireWire connections.
- What warranty is included with PaperHub?
- PaperHub comes with a one year warranty.
- How difficult is it to set up PaperHub?
- Very, very simple. There's absolutely NO special software to install. Three cables need to be connected - one USB going from PaperHub to your computer, one FireWire going from PaperHub to your computer, and the power cable, leading to the external power supply (which you then plug into an electrical outlet). That's it.
